In 1993, we automated an industrial bakery with then state-of-the-art technology: the Siemens S5 PLC. These PLCs store their programming in RAM memory, which means they have to remain powered up continuously to avoid losing their code. To cope with temporary power interruptions, they provide a back-up battery.
Years later, our client suddenly suffered a power failure. The battery of the PLC, now elderly, turned out to be flat. Consequence: the installation no longer started up, and production came to a standstill. As a business manager, that's exactly what you want to avoid.
EFVEO was contacted and was able to intervene immediately. Thanks to our structured documentation and archiving methods, we found the original programming, schematics and software in no time. In no time, we programmed the code onto an EEPROM module - a memory that does not require a battery to retain data - and installed it on site.
Although EEPROM technology is considered obsolete today, it was the right solution for this challenge. We have a very extensive stock of both modern components and legacy systems. This allows us to move quickly, even with older installations.
The rapid intervention allowed the industrial bakery to resume production almost immediately. Had the original code no longer been available, the entire programming would have had to be rewritten from scratch - a process that was going to take a very long time and cost handsomely.
